Rising dramatically, Yeongbong Peak stands as the highest point in Woraksan National Park. Have you all prepared for a challenging climb?

Yeongbong Peak is no ordinary mountain. It’s a place where steep cliffs meet determined hikers. It’s famous for its dramatic landscape. Its Korean name is \uc601\ubd09.

Imagine a New Year’s Day. The village below Yeongbong Peak is packed. Every room is booked. A kind soul finally opens an extra room. It is cold and a little desperate.

The next morning, the mission begins. Hikers weave upwards through the snowy forest. The snow gets thicker. Signs of life appear. Mice scurry, and birds call.

Turning a corner, the forest thins. The path transforms into a spiral staircase. It clings to Yeongbong Peak’s cliffs. The steps are icy. Climbers grip railings. Far below, hikers appear as tiny specks of bright color. Above, gnarled pines reach out from the rocks.

The climb to Yeongbong Peak is not for the faint of heart. Some may consider this expert level. Trees are scarce on this particular trail. Stairs go straight up. Railings are bolted to boulders. Hands constantly grip or pull.

Ma-aebong Peak appears. It is a false summit. It stands 960m tall. Yeongbong Peak is still in the distance at 1097m. The real summit is the true destination.

More stairs ascend straight up. More difficult sections require hanging on tight. Yank yourself up a railing with two hands. It is ultimately enjoyable. But it can be the most difficult climb.

At the top, the views are amazing. The previous days’ hiking may catch up with you. Maybe you’re just tired. Or maybe you are hungry. Legs are definitely sore.

Relaxing at Yeongbong Peak is so enjoyable. Naps are tempting. Crackers, tuna, and apples restore energy.

The trail down is different. It’s heavily wooded. Viewpoints are scarce. Hop down the trail with good speed. You might be tired and can’t wait for dinner.

Woraksan National Park is rocky and challenging. Reaching Ma-aebong Peak and Yeongbong Peak reveals Chungju-ho. It’s a huge lake. It’s unique and beautiful.

Buses run directly from Seoul to Woraksan National Park. Ask the driver to stop in Hansu village for the nearest trailhead.

Yeongbong Peak is a steep and dramatic peak. It is an important summit. You can accept the Korean 100 summits challenge.

Woraksan also draws visitors hoping to glimpse the Korean goral antelope. Gorals were reintroduced to Woraksan. Woraksan even features a goral as its logo.

As you descend, remember the challenge. Remember the views. Remember the goral. Yeongbong Peak offers a unique experience.
