Whispers of dragons and blossoming peonies greet you at Rokusonno Shrine. This isn’t just any shrine. It’s one of the Three Genji Shrines a sacred place deeply connected to the powerful Seiwa Genji branch of the Minamoto clan.

Established in 963 Rokusonno Shrine is dedicated to Minamoto no Norimoto. He was the grandson of Emperor Seiwa. Legend says after his death he transformed into a dragon god. This powerful being now watches over his descendants.

Look closely. See the Shinryu Pond? It’s said Norimoto lived here as a dragon god. Carp swim in its waters their images adorning votive tablets. Notice the Koi no Kakebashi the bridge of love. It is believed to bless couples seeking marriage.

Beyond the pond stands the main shrine dedicated to Norimoto. Next to it is the Birthwater Benzaiten. This deity resides over the well where Norimoto’s son Mitsunaka was supposedly born. She is a guardian for children.

Spring brings a spectacular display. Cherry blossoms paint the grounds in delicate pink and white. Peonies Norimoto’s favorite flowers also bloom adding vibrant color. These blossoms attract many visitors to Rokusonno Shrine.

The annual Hoei Matsuri festival is a sight to behold. It commemorates the shrine’s restoration in 1704. The Tokugawa shogunate played a significant role in this restoration. The festival features a vibrant procession with children dressed as priests. It’s a grand celebration that showcases rich traditions.

Rokusonno Shrine is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to history legend and the enduring spirit of the Seiwa Genji. It’s a place where ancient stories come alive. It’s a must see for anyone exploring Kyoto’s rich cultural heritage.
