Before you stands Union Congregational Church a beacon of history and resilience. This isn’t just any church. It’s the oldest Black congregation in New England Methodism. Imagine its humble beginnings in 1769. A small group of African American believers gathered for worship on Beacon Hill. They yearned for spiritual freedom. They craved a space to connect and grow in faith.

Their faith blossomed. They requested their first pastor Reverend Samuel Snowden a former slave turned abolitionist. Together they established the Mary Street Meeting House. This wasn’t merely a place of worship it became a symbol of hope.

The congregation expanded. They built a larger church. It soon became a vital station on the Underground Railroad. They sheltered those seeking freedom. They offered a safe haven. This courageous act exemplifies their enduring commitment to social justice.

As Boston’s Black population shifted so did the church. It followed its members moving to Roxbury then finally to its current home on Columbus Avenue in the South End. The name changed to Union reflecting the unified spirit of its people.

The church played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1950 Union hosted the NAACP convention. This pivotal meeting voted to pursue Brown v Board of Education a landmark case that desegregated schools. The church continued its advocacy work fighting against apartheid in South Africa and championing economic equality.

In 2000 Union made history again becoming the first historically Black Methodist congregation in the United States to formally welcome the LGBTQ+ community. Its commitment to love and liberation remains steadfast.

In 2023 Union merged with three other United Methodist congregations forming the Union Combined Parish. Yet its legacy as a place of refuge and activism endures. Look closely at the Gothic Revival architecture. This beautiful building designed by Alexander Rice Esty stands as a testament to its enduring spirit.

This is more than a building. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and the ongoing struggle for justice. Union Congregational Church is a powerful symbol of the enduring spirit of a community that has never given up on its values. A community that has overcome adversity to build a place of worship and a pillar of its community.
