Wow. Look at this impressive building. This is the Schule am See. It’s more than just a school. It’s a hub of community life in Hamburg-Steilshoop.

The Schule am See isn’t just a recent addition to the Hamburg skyline. Its history stretches back to 1971. That’s when the Integrierte Gesamtschule Steilshoop was founded right here. The original building stood from 1969 to 2017. It was eventually demolished to make way for the stunning structure we see today. The old building was torn down in stages. Parts of the old building were even still standing while the new one was being constructed.

Imagine the construction! A feasibility study was conducted. This was followed by an architectural competition. The winning design was chosen in 2014. It’s the work of Hascher Jehle architects in Berlin. Their plan resulted in the modern campus we see. The new campus boasts two buildings. It covers 12800 square meters. The campus includes not only the Schule am See. It also houses a youth center and a local library. The entire complex was opened in 2019.

The Schule am See is a Stadtteilschule. That’s a type of comprehensive school in Hamburg. It offers classes for students from preschool to the 10th grade. But that’s not all. There are exciting developments! Starting in the 2023-2024 school year the school will add an upper secondary level. This means the school will offer the Abitur. The Abitur is the German university entrance qualification. They hope to graduate their first Abitur class in 2026.

So the Schule am See is not just a school. It’s a vital part of the community. It’s a place where children learn and grow. It’s a place where the community gathers. It’s a place that shows how a building can combine a rich history with a modern design. It’s a testament to Hamburg’s investment in its future.
