Listen closely. Songcheon-dong Catholic Church has a fascinating story. It began as Mia-dong Church.
In August 1982, Mia-dong Church became Mia 5-dong Church. It was then separated and established. Initial funding came from Father Kim Jong-guk. Father Lee Beom-ju also contributed during his tenure.
In February 1989, Father Yoo Sang-ryeol took office. In March 1990, twelve shacks were removed. Fundraising began with a bazaar in May. Architect Ma Chim-nae completed the designs. Construction started. It finished on August 21, 1992.
On November 7, 1993, Bishop Kim Soo-hwan dedicated the church. Now, let’s jump ahead.
In 2009, the church was renamed Songcheon-dong Catholic Church. Major renovations began in 2012. Bishop Yeom Soo-jung rededicated it on May 26, 2013.
Songcheon-dong Catholic Church began with the faithful. Residents of Mia 1, 5, 6, and 7-dong wanted their own church. Mia-dong Church was large. These residents formed a vibrant group. They called themselves the ‘Gyeoja Association’.
In January 1982, they started a building fund. They bought a two-story building. About 2,300 believers celebrated the first Mass.
In 1993, the new Songcheon-dong Catholic Church was built. Bishop Kim Soo-hwan presided over the dedication.
Father Kim Jong-guk was the first pastor. He served for five years. Father Lee Beom-ju followed. He raised funds for the new church. He acquired more land.
Father Yoo Sang-ryeol became the third pastor. He removed the shacks. He also organized bazaars. These efforts helped construction. The construction company was Kwangmoon Construction. Inspection was completed in August 1992.
Each pastor brought unique focus. Father Choi Chi-gyu emphasized love. He also focused on lay-centered church activities. He wanted to develop a new parish model. He valued scripture-centered education.
Father Kim Yeon-jung pursued internal growth. He strengthened believer education. His goals included living by the Bible and activating small communities. He also promoted evangelism.
Father Ra Byung-guk created a new parish community. He worked with the diocese. He involved all believers.
Songcheon-dong Catholic Church has a special place in the community. It has evolved over the years. It remains a center of faith for many. It is a testament to dedication. It represents community spirit. Its history is filled with people’s devotion.
