Behold St John’s Church a majestic presence in Luneburg’s heart. This isn’t just any church. It’s the oldest Lutheran church in this charming Hanseatic city. Built between 1300 and 1370 it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Luneburg. Its architectural style is Brick Gothic a style Luneburg is renowned for. Look up at its towering spire. At 108 meters it’s the second tallest church tower in Lower Saxony second only to St Andrew’s in Hildesheim.

Imagine the generations who have walked these very stones. This church has witnessed centuries of history. It has seen Luneburg grow from a small settlement to a thriving city. It has heard the prayers of countless worshippers.

A fascinating story surrounds its construction. In the early 15th century Prince-Bishop Conrad of Soltau tried to make St John’s the cathedral of his see. The city council resisted this fearing political interference. The city’s independence was fiercely protected. The church remained a testament to Luneburg’s autonomy.

The spire itself holds a legend. It subtly slopes. The legend says the master builder fell from a high window. He miraculously landed on a hay wagon. He survived. Celebrating this near-death experience he had one too many drinks at a local tavern. He fell and hit his head. Sadly the celebration turned fatal. The spire’s tilt remains a quirky reminder of his misadventure.

Inside St John’s Church is equally impressive. A 15th-century carved altar stands as a masterpiece of woodcarving. The altar depicts scenes from the Passion and Easter stories. In the Elisabeth Chapel stunning stained-glass windows created by Charles Crodel in 1969 add a modern touch to this historic space.

The church is not just about history. It houses two large organs. The main organ was completed in 1553. It was rebuilt later by the famous Arp Schnitger’s student Matthias Dropa. This very organ may have been used by the young Johann Sebastian Bach. While there is no conclusive proof Bach scholars believe Georg Bohm taught the young Bach here. The church has been featured on BBC television showcasing its exceptional organ.

St John’s Church is much more than just a building. It is a symbol of Luneburg’s history. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and a touch of legend. It stands as a proud symbol of Luneburg. It stands as a testament to the city’s enduring spirit and faith. Take a moment to appreciate its grandeur its history. And perhaps let your imagination wander to the stories held within its walls.
