“Have you ever seen a building nicknamed a washing machine?” That’s what some Berliners call the Federal Chancellery. Right here before you stands this imposing structure a symbol of German governance. This isn’t just any office building. It’s the largest government headquarters in the world. Think about that for a moment eight times bigger than the White House.

The Federal Chancellery’s design is a fascinating story. Architects Axel Schultes and Charlotte Frank masterminded this postmodern masterpiece. They envisioned it as part of a larger complex known as the “Band des Bundes”. Construction took four years. In 2001 then Chancellor Gerhard Schröder moved in marking the completion of the government’s relocation from Bonn to Berlin.

The building is a marvel of engineering. It houses not only offices but also living quarters. Interestingly enough former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder only used the apartment during the work week. His family stayed in Hanover. The Federal Chancellery has a helipad. It also boasts a vast garden the Kanzlerpark. It’s truly a city within a city covering around 73000 square meters.

There are even some amusing stories associated with this place. Many staff members originated from Bonn the former seat of government. They brought their Rhineland traditions to Berlin. During carnival time the canteen windows are sealed. This is to prevent the impression that the country is ruled by “flaky fools”. There are also rumors of a ghost thanks to a rather intimidating cleaner.

Though primarily used for serious government business the Federal Chancellery has some quirky aspects. Journalists nicknamed the building the “Federal Washing Machine” because of a porthole-shaped window in Angela Merkel’s office. It also goes by other nicknames like “Elefantenklo” or “Kohllosseum” reflecting its sheer size and its association with former Chancellor Helmut Kohl.

Every year at the end of August the Federal Chancellery traditionally opens its doors. The public can visit for a “State Visit” day a testament to its commitment to transparency. Though a virtual tour is available on the government website the true experience of standing before the Federal Chancellery is something quite special. It’s a powerful reminder of Germany’s political heart. Take a moment to appreciate its scale its design its history and the intriguing stories it holds within its walls.
