Didn’t buildings also have stories to tell? The Haus Melanchthon certainly does. Here, in Berlin, stands a testament to history. It is a place of research and remembrance. This building is more than just bricks and mortar. It holds the spirit of an era long past.

The Haus Melanchthon was built between 1897 and 1903. It stands where the reformer’s birthplace once stood. The original building tragically burned down in 1689. Johann Vollmer, a professor from the Technical University in Berlin-Charlottenburg, designed the new structure. Architects H. Billing and W. Jung carried out his vision.

The foundation stone was laid on February 16, 1897. This marked the 400th anniversary of Melanchthon’s birth. The festive inauguration took place in 1903. Much of the credit goes to Dr. Nikolaus Müller. He was a church historian and archeologist from the University of Berlin.

Step inside the Haus Melanchthon. You will discover a museum and a library. It is one of the most extensive collections specializing in Melanchthon. The Haus Melanchthon serves as a center for international Melanchthon research.

The memory hall awaits. Admire the frescoes. Explore rooms filled with approximately 11000 books. Gaze upon 450 autographs. Discover statues, coats of arms, paintings, commemorative coins, and prints.

The interior decoration remains unchanged since 1903. Look around. See the coats of arms on the ceilings and walls. Notice the sculptures and paintings. Observe the bookcases and glass cupboards. Appreciate the precious bull’s eye glass windows.

The impressive memorial hall reveals the life of the great scholar. He was a relative of Johannes Reuchlin and a close friend of Martin Luther. The hall is used for lectures, concerts, and exhibitions.

The chamber of cities features 121 coats of arms carved in wood. These represent the many cities associated with Melanchthon. The chamber of theologians honors the churchmen who were Melanchthon’s friends. The chamber of princes represents the political forces of the Reformation. The stained-glass windows depict princes, earls, and noblemen. These figures supported the introduction of Reformation theology. The chamber of humanists commemorates Melanchthon’s contemporaries from science and arts.

The Haus Melanchthon is not just a building. It is a living tribute to a man who shaped history. It is a place where the past comes alive.
