How did a small bicycle company from Somerville, Massachusetts, become a world-renowned brand? Let me tell you the story of Independent Fabrication, right here in Lynn. Independent Fabrication, or IF as it’s affectionately known, wasn’t built on marketing hype. It was built on sweat, passion, and an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship. Founded in 1995 by former employees of Fat City Cycles and Merlin Metalworks, they started with a simple premise: build each bike as if it were their own. Independent Fabrication quickly gained a reputation for its custom-built steel mountain bike frames. Their Deluxe and Special models turned heads at bike shows, drawing in a dedicated following. They expanded their range to include road, cyclocross, and even cruiser bikes, showcasing their versatility. Independent Fabrication wasn’t content with just steel. They embraced new technologies, incorporating titanium and carbon fiber into their designs. The XS model, a blend of carbon and titanium, even earned them Bicycling Magazine’s “Dream Bike of the Year” award twice. In 2005, Independent Fabrication’s story took an interesting turn. They participated in a CNN program called “The Turnaround,” where they were mentored by Jeff Swartz, CEO of Timberland. This experience undoubtedly helped shape their business acumen. Independent Fabrication moved to New Hampshire in 2011, but returned to Massachusetts in 2022 under the ownership of longtime employee Keith Rouse, landing not far from their Somerville roots. Independent Fabrication continues to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation. Each frame is custom-designed and meticulously crafted, reflecting the rider’s individual needs and style. They’ve even established a owners’ club, a testament to the loyalty and passion their bikes inspire.
