“A beacon of hope.” That’s what they call Clair Memorial United Methodist Church. This church has served Jersey City residents for almost 80 years. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience.

Clair Memorial United Methodist Church history involves two congregations. Thirkield Methodist Episcopal Church and St. Mark Zion Methodist Church merged in 1945. St. Mark Zion Methodist Church was an outgrowth of the African Methodist Zion church founded in November 1849. Thirkield Church started in 1917. Several people wanted a church for people of Methodist faith. Dr. William Beck and Mrs. Della Williams led this initiative.

Internal and financial difficulties plagued both churches by 1944. Rev. Douglas M. Collins was appointed to both St. Mark and Thirkield. He led the merger. The officials chose a new name. They honored the late Rev. Mathew W. Claire. St. Mark brought 161 members. Thirkield added 60. Rev. Collins became the pastor.

Clair Memorial thrived under many great pastors including Rev. Collins. It became a stable institution. It served the largely Black Bergen Lafayette neighborhood since its construction in 1920.

Tragedy struck in April 2001. A fire gutted the church. Only the original brick walls remained. But faith endured. Temple Beth El offered their synagogue for Clair Memorial’s Easter service. This act of kindness extended for ten years. Clair Memorial held regular Sunday services there. The Congress of Racial Equality recognized this interfaith cooperation. They presented both congregations with the 2001 Harmony Award.

Groundbreaking for the restoration occurred May 21 2003. Architect Michael Campbell designed the $2.3 million project. Insurance and fundraising made it possible.

Clair Memorial reopened on April 18 2011. The congregation marched from the Temple to the rebuilt church. Songs and shouts of joy filled the air.

The restored church retains some original exterior structure. A new entrance and stained-glass panels were installed. The seating capacity increased.

Today, Pastor Dawrell Rich leads Clair Memorial. They strengthen programs. They move forward as a brighter light in the community. All are welcome.

Clair Memorial still preserves cultural and spiritual heritage. It addresses social and environmental justice issues. The church needs financial support. It seeks to raise $120000 by December 31 2025. These funds will repair the roof foundation and tower. They will maintain the building’s architectural integrity.

Compassion openness and personal integrity are its values. Social justice and hospitality matter. Excellence community forgiveness faithfulness and prayer guide them.

Clair Memorial United Methodist Church stands as a testament to resilience. It embodies faith hope and community spirit. Its story is one of perseverance. Its legacy continues to inspire.
