Imagine red brick houses. These houses stand with white joints. Welcome to Medaillonplatz. These houses mimic Dutch townhouses. They add a unique touch to the Rummelsburger Bucht.

Medaillonplatz is more than just pretty houses. It is a living space for sixteen families. These families have different structures. Their sizes vary. Living, working, raising children plus hobbies all blend under one roof. It creates a vibrant community.

Inside these townhouses no walls are load-bearing. This allows residents to design their layouts. They can customize their homes to suit their needs. The large eat-in kitchen is the heart of each house. It opens to a terrace and garden. A sculptural staircase connects all four levels.

Each house on Medaillonplatz boasts a green front yard. It faces the square. Neighbors chat here. The quiet garden terrace is for family gatherings. Residents relax here. They celebrate here. The carefully tended gardens and public promenades enhance the area. They improve the quality of life.

These townhouses on Medaillonplatz are owner-occupied. This fosters a strong social structure. It positively impacts neighboring areas. Medaillonplatz stands on land with a rich past. It was once part of the Friedrichs-Waisenhaus Rummelsburg complex.

The Friedrichs-Waisenhaus Rummelsburg was an orphanage. It opened in 1859. Gustav Holtzmann designed it. It housed orphaned boys and girls from Berlin. The orphanage had several buildings including four brick houses. These housed boys and girls separately. There were also support buildings a hospital and a church.

In 1949 the orphanage closed. Some buildings continued as a children’s home until 1953. Later the area became a base for border troops of the GDR. After German reunification in 1990 the area was redeveloped.

The city created the Rummelsburger Bucht development area. The two remaining boys’ houses were renovated in 2003. They became apartments. Streets were named to honor the orphanage’s history. An den Knabenhäusern and Gustav-Holzmann-Straße remind us of the past.

Medaillonplatz itself marks one of the orphanage’s former squares. Today Medaillonplatz is a vibrant residential area. It combines modern living with historical echoes. The red brick houses are carefully designed. They reference the area’s history. They create a unique urban space.

The sense of community thrives here. It is a testament to thoughtful urban planning. It honors the past while embracing the future. As you stroll through Medaillonplatz notice the blend of old and new. The architecture reflects history. The vibrant community breathes life into the present. It’s a place where families thrive.
