The hotel’s guest list glittered with names like Rita Hayworth, Mickey Rooney, and Ava Gardner. Manuel Barbachano’s purchase of the hotel in 1929 propelled Rosarito’s growth. His vision brought electricity and phone service to the area, transforming it into a modern destination. The hotel expanded, adding a grand casino and more luxurious rooms. The casino may be gone now, but the grandeur of the hotel’s foyer remains, with its 20-foot ceilings and captivating murals. Look closely and you can still see the elegant image of Maria Luisa Chabert, Mr. Barbachano’s wife, in stained glass at the hotel entrance.
Rosarito officially became an independent city in 1995, marking a significant milestone in its history.
