This imposing structure before us is Namsomun Gate also known as Sungnyemun Gate. It stands as a testament to Seoul’s rich history. Did you know that its construction began way back in 1395 and finished in 1398 under King Taejo? This magnificent gate was one of three major gateways in the city. It served as a grand entrance greeting important visitors and keeping out invaders and even Siberian tigers.

Namsomun Gate is more than just a gate. It is South Korea’s first National Treasure. Imagine the countless stories held within its walls. The gate has witnessed centuries of change. It has been rebuilt and renovated many times. It even survived the Korean War. Sadly a devastating fire in 2008 almost destroyed it. This fire was no accident. A man named Chae Jong-gi intentionally started the blaze. He was motivated by a land dispute and chose Namsomun Gate as a target.

After five long years of painstaking work and a cost of 20 billion won the gate was fully restored. It reopened to the public in 2013. Today we stand before a symbol of resilience a beacon of history. Namsomun Gate stands as a reminder of Seoul’s enduring spirit. It is a testament to the city’s ability to overcome adversity and preserve its cultural heritage. Remember this is not just a gate. It is the heart of Seoul. A place where history lives and breathes. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty and the stories it holds. This gate is more than just stone and wood. It is a living legacy. It’s a beautiful symbol of Seoul’s strength.
