Initially a project of Inner City Development San Anto Cultural Arte Center gained its independence in 1997.
The center’s mission is to foster human and community development through community-based arts. This isn’t just a lofty goal it’s a tangible reality woven into the fabric of the neighborhood. Two main programs drive this mission: the Community Mural Program and El Placazo Community Newspaper. Think of it not just as a center but a vibrant organism. It breathes life into the community through colorful murals adorning the walls. It gives voice to the residents through the pages of El Placazo a community newspaper produced by the youth.

They are iconic symbols representing the neighborhoods they grace. Thousands of young people have learned design drawing and painting skills working alongside professional artists. El Placazo the center’s community newspaper empowers youth further. They learn writing photography and journalism. These skills translate into academic achievement stronger critical thinking and personal growth fostering responsible future community leaders. The newspaper has published over 234 issues documenting and preserving the rich history and heritage of San Antonio’s Westside.
