Established in the autumn of 1920 Nativity Catholic Church stands proudly in Los Angeles. Its story began with Bishop John J. Cantwell. He established this parish dedicated to the Nativity of our Blessed Lord. Father Edward J. Riordan became the first pastor. The first Holy Mass was celebrated on December 12 1920. It was held in a parishioner’s home. This was the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Within months land was purchased on 57th Street and Vermont Avenue. Construction on the church began immediately. Nativity Parish grew rapidly. More land was acquired. A parish school opened in 1925. This demonstrates the community’s expanding needs. The church expanded to serve its growing congregation.

Today Nativity Catholic Church boasts 350 registered families. It has over 10 active ministries. Daily bilingual Masses are offered. There’s one Sunday Mass in English. Three Spanish Sunday Masses cater to the large Latino population. This reflects the church’s dedication to its community. Many parishioners are Latinos. They have transformed South Los Angeles. Their faith and traditions are interwoven into the fabric of the church.

A fascinating anecdote illustrates this transformation. In 1992 parishioners placed a shrine to la Virgen de Guadalupe in the church. It’s a testament to the growing Latino community. The Virgin Mary is credited with miracles. People travel from far and wide to visit her shrine. This shows the powerful spiritual significance of the church to the neighborhood. The church is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant heart of the community. Its history reflects the changing demographics of Los Angeles. It’s a place of faith hope and cultural richness.
