Once, Trappenfelde was home to a unique bird. The great bustard, a flight-capable bird, lived here until about 70 years ago. Trappenfelde is a small settlement that belongs to Mehrow. It is part of the municipality of Ahrensfelde.
In the 19th century, industrialization boosted Mehrow’s growth. East of the village center, a farm estate emerged. In 1888, it officially became Trappenfelde. The name Trappenfelde comes from the German name for the great bustard. This bird even adorns Mehrow’s coat of arms since 2002.
During the DDR era, Trappenfelde had a large dairy farm. VEB Kombinat Industrielle Mast converted it into a chicken farm. This farm produced fresh eggs.
Today, the von Helldorff family manages Trappenfelde since 1990. They focus on agriculture and forestry. They also rent out land and buildings.
Mehrow sits about 60 meters above sea level. It is east of Ahrensfelde on the Barnim plateau. The historic mill building catches your eye at the entrance to Mehrow. The mill once ground grain into flour. Now, it houses stylish apartments. Many generations have skated on the large pond in the village center. The last ice age left many ponds around Mehrow.
The community gathers at the fire station for festivals. They also meet at the church or the baking oven. The oven fires up six or seven times a year. People bake bread, pizza, and cakes. The local farm shop sells many products made in Mehrow. Customers from nearby Berlin enjoy shopping here. Once a year, the village hosts a variety show.
Behind the cemetery, the Lake hides. Its thickets provide shelter for birds and amphibians. Under the A 10 highway lies the Vorwerk Trappenfelde. Old farmhouses and countless horse paddocks dot the hilly landscape. The shy great bustard still lives here.
Bernhard Wollermann, the local mayor, says Mehrow is a typical Brandenburg village. It has a lively community. Surrounded by beautiful nature, it is only 20 kilometers from Alexanderplatz.
In Mehrow and Trappenfelde, you can visit the village baking oven. There is also a book exchange and a Wi-Fi bench by the pond. A playground is in the village center. The Mehrower Hof is an event location with rooms. Landhof Rahlfs offers regional products, including meat from straw-fed pigs. The Park an der Lake is perfect for walks. Laubenganghäuser are model homes from the 1930s. At Am Walde in Trappenfelde, Reitschule am Walde offers horse riding. Boxenstopp, a seasonal café, is also at the riding school. So, Trappenfelde is a place with a rich history.
