Across from the bustling South 23rd Street in Philadelphia, stands New Gethsemane Baptist Church, a beacon of faith and community for over a century. The church’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the unwavering spirit of its members.

New Gethsemane Baptist Church wasn’t always located at this address. In 1926, it began as a small congregation at 8th and Berks Streets under the leadership of Reverend Pinkney Burnam, a pastor whose legacy continues to inspire generations of congregants. However, after just a few years, God blessed the church with a move to 1747 Cambridge Street – a larger space to accommodate its growing community.

This relocation was a sign of things to come. The church continued to thrive, and its name was formally changed to New Gethsemane Baptist Church in 1937. God also granted the church a substantial growth in membership under the leadership of Reverend Amos Turner, who served as pastor from 1934 to 1947.

The church’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. In the 1980s, New Gethsemane Baptist Church faced a significant financial hurdle. They couldn’t secure a mortgage to build a new edifice – and the church decided to pay as they went. But, with God’s grace and the unwavering faith of its members, they managed to pay a staggering $1.8 million! The church has seen the fruits of this immense sacrifice and faith – a testament to their unwavering spirit and commitment to their community.

Today, New Gethsemane Baptist Church stands strong. It has played a pivotal role in the lives of countless members, offering a haven of spirituality and community. The church continues to grow – a constant reminder that even in the face of adversity, faith can move mountains.
