Could a tiny suburb hold such immense history? Ellinghausen in Dortmund, despite its small size, boasts a history stretching back to the 8th century. This quaint district, nestled in Dortmund’s northwest, whispers tales of a time long past, from its days as a modest settlement in the former County of Dortmund to its modern-day transformation. Ellinghausen, bordered by Schwieringhausen, Holthausen, Lindenhorst, Deusen, Nette, and Groppenbruch, offers a unique blend of rural charm and industrial heritage. Imagine Ellinghausen in the 20th century, a landscape dominated by the Minister Stein and Fürst Hardenberg coal mines. These industrial giants reshaped the terrain, using much of Ellinghausen for coal and spoil heaps. The impact of these industries on the small community of around 90 residents, most of whom were farmers until about 20 years ago, is a significant part of Ellinghausen’s story. Although farming has disappeared, the echoes of Ellinghausen’s agricultural past remain in the form of historic farmhouses, some dating back to the 12th century. The scars of World War II are also etched into Ellinghausen’s history. A Flak base, established to protect Dortmund’s city center, made Ellinghausen a target for heavy air raids. Today, Ellinghausen has embraced a new identity. The former spoil heaps of the Hoesch AG are now home to a massive 72,000 m³ Ikea distribution center. This modern behemoth, employing 1300 people, stands in stark contrast to the surrounding fields and farm paths. Yet, Ellinghausen retains its tranquil appeal. Cyclists and walkers enjoy the Emscher-Weg and Dortmund-Ems-Canal-Route, which wind through the suburb. The Westfalen-Triathlon, held around Fredenbaumpark, also passes through Ellinghausen, adding a touch of athletic energy to the peaceful landscape. Dominating the skyline is “Ellwira,” a striking wind turbine erected in 2005. Its presence symbolizes Ellinghausen’s journey from a small farming community to a blend of industrial activity and modern sustainability. Ellinghausen also plays a crucial role in Dortmund’s flood management system. One of the two flood retention basins for the Emscher river is located within its boundaries, a silent testament to the suburb’s vital contribution to the larger city. Ellinghausen, a small suburb with a big story, offers a captivating glimpse into Dortmund’s past and present.
