Could a building whisper secrets of a bygone era? Here at the Gemeindeschule Niederschöneweide, the walls seem to do just that. This grand structure, erected in 1898-1899, stands as a testament to the burgeoning pride of this once-industrial suburb. Gemeindeschule Niederschöneweide isn’t just a school; it’s a historical landmark, a cultural touchstone, designed by Paul Egeling, the renowned Schöneberg city architect. Egeling, known for his numerous schools and fire stations, left his distinctive mark on Niederschöneweide. He clothed the Gemeindeschule in the garb of a medieval town hall, employing neo-Gothic elements, soaring roofs, and pointed gables. Imagine the bustle of activity as students filled its classrooms, accessed through vaulted hallways. Picture the grandeur of the Aula, its neo-Gothic design, tracery windows, and vibrant wall panels creating a festive atmosphere. This very Aula served as the local Protestant church until the Friedenskirche was built. The Gemeindeschule Niederschöneweide has always been more than just bricks and mortar. It has served as a focal point for the community. Originally built for the Gemeindeschule, which was founded in 1879, it later housed both the 1st and 2nd Gemeindeschule after 1921. Over the years, it transitioned through various roles, becoming the 13th Volksschule, then the 6th, even sharing space with the 7th Volksschule. After the war, it continued its service as a primary and middle school, later named the Arkadi-Gaidar-Oberschule, and finally, the Grundschule an der alten Feuerwache. Adjacent to the Gemeindeschule Niederschöneweide is another Egeling creation: the former gymnasium, also built in 1898-1899. This smaller, castle-style building, constructed of red brick, retains echoes of its original grandeur. While its intricate roofline, pinnacles, and battlements have vanished, replaced by a simpler hipped roof, the southern narrow side still speaks of its castle-like past. The main entrance, facing Grünauer Straße, is flanked by two imposing round towers, connected by a bridge-like passage, reminiscent of castle ramparts. The Gemeindeschule Niederschöneweide is more than an architectural marvel; it’s a time capsule, holding within its walls the spirit of a community and the echoes of generations past.
