Here at Jesus Christ is the Lord Universal, we delve into a story of faith and transformation. The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God began reaching out to people in Johannesburg in 1992. A bishop and pastor started evangelical work in Bezuidenhout Valley.
But how did this global church find its roots in South Africa? The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God is a contemporary evangelical church. Pastor Edir Macedo established it in 1977. He wanted to help the poor offering them practical support and spiritual guidance.
In 1993, the first official church opened. It was in a Hoek Street basement in Johannesburg’s CBD. Two hundred people attended the first service. The church was near Park Station Terminus. The following week, the number of attendees doubled.
Soon, the Johannesburg premises were too small. In August 1993, services started in a Soweto warehouse. That same year, a Durban church opened. It served the needs of that community. By 1995, the first big church was built in Johannesburg. It stood between Hoek, De Villiers, Plein and Eloff streets.
The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God grew quickly. It now has almost 300 churches in all nine provinces of South Africa. The Cathedral in Soweto is especially noteworthy. It’s modeled after the UCKG’s Cathedral in Rio de Janerio, Brazil. It is also an important tourist attraction. Many people find salvation and improve their lives here.
The UCKG also has smaller churches. In rural areas, pastors and volunteers hold outreach programs. They use rented spaces, tents or even open areas.
The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God holds services every day. Bishops and pastors are trained “people of God.” They serve their communities with dedication. They offer spiritual guidance and practical support. The church provides help centers and HIV/Aids awareness campaigns. It runs empowerment initiatives and a 24-hour counseling helpline. To spread their message, the church uses media. They broadcast the Worker’s Prayer daily. They have weekly TV programs such as I am Soul Precious. Problems vs Solutions and Game Changer also feature. These air on eTV. They also have regular online and social media programs. The church publishes the Stop Suffering newspaper weekly. They also publish Plenitude magazine.
The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God hosts annual events. Night vigils are held in FNB Stadium. Good Friday services take place in the Ellis Park Precinct. Marches against HIV/Aids and gender-based violence are organized. The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God exists for spiritual support and community care.
Each day of the week has a special focus. Monday is the Congress of Success focused on finances and business. Tuesday is the Day of Healing and Miracles for spiritual and physical healing. Wednesday is the School of Intelligent Faith to build inner strength. Thursday offers Therapy of Love for relationship guidance. Friday is the Day of Deliverance to remove curses. Saturday includes Fasting for the Impossible situations. Spiritual Therapy occurs on Sundays at 7am and 10am.
Women in Action is a group of pastors’ wives. They help women overcome past pain. They offer information, practical support, and guidance.
Bishops, pastors, and assistant pastors lead services. They are dedicated men and women of God. They serve God by helping the congregation and community. Assistants are volunteers who support the church.
