Opened in 1903, Deanside railway station seems like a fleeting dream. It served Hillington, Glasgow for a mere two years before closing in 1905. Imagine the hustle and bustle of those early days. The Glasgow and Renfrew District Railway brought passengers to this island platform station. A station building with canopies on all sides offered shelter. Passengers accessed the platform from a road overbridge carrying Old Govan Road and Old Renfrew Road via a flight of stairs. A signal box stood north of the bridge, east of a double-track junction. From here, the main line stretched westward, while the Clyde Trust Siding branched northwest towards Renfrew Harbour. Interestingly, Deanside Depot, situated north of Old Renfrew Road, was accessed by reversing from this siding. Deanside station’s location was initially in a sparsely populated area. However, in the subsequent years, King George V Dock rose to the east, Braehead Transit to the north, and Deanside Transit to the south. The Clyde Trust Siding connected the station to Renfrew Harbour. The station closed in 1905, much earlier than others on the line, which closed in 1926. The signal box followed suit in 1925 when the line was reduced to a single track. During World War II, Braehead and Deanside Transit depots emerged within the junction’s ‘V’ between the main line and the Renfrew Harbour line. These depots comprised four large transit sheds with a small marshalling yard on the north side. Remarkably, the island platform of Deanside station remained until the 1970s. Today, the site serves as a loop for reversing to access Deanside Transit, located to the south.
