Built in 1928 and consecrated in 1929 the Kath Kirche Christus Koenig stands proudly in Berlin-Adlershof. Its brick facade speaks volumes of its history. This Romanesque-inspired church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and the architectural brilliance of Carl Kchn.

The Kath Kirche Christus Koenig wasn’t built overnight. Adlershof’s rapid industrial growth in the early 20th century led to a surge in its Catholic population. They lacked a proper church and had to travel far to attend mass. A church building association formed in 1913 but World War I and subsequent inflation stalled progress. For years services were held in a school auditorium.

Finally in 1927 the Kuratie Christus Koenig was established. The choice of patronage reflected the importance of Christ’s kingship a concept celebrated annually. The Bonifatiuswerk a charitable organization provided essential financial support enabling the construction to begin.

The church’s design is a fascinating blend of styles. Kchn incorporated medieval features like the towering westwork yet integrated elements of Expressionism particularly in the intricate brickwork and the building’s unique proportions. The church’s interior is equally striking. Terrakotta sculptures by Maximilian Habersetzer adorn the apse depicting Christ among his apostles. In 1946 Egbert Lammers created stunning stained-glass windows. These add to the beauty of the space.

The Kath Kirche Christus Koenig wasn’t spared the ravages of war but survived largely unscathed. In 2004 it merged with other local parishes. The church’s impressive Rieger organ built in 1933 is used for both religious services and public concerts. A restoration in 2007 ensured it continues to fill the building with music. A dedicated church support association works tirelessly to preserve this architectural gem.

The Kath Kirche Christus Koenig is far more than just a beautiful building. It is a living testament to the faith of the community and its enduring legacy within Berlin.
