Off the coast of Rockaway Beach, a phantom island lingers in the memories of New York City. Hog Island, once a vibrant vacation spot, now exists only in stories and whispers. Hog Island emerged from the sea, a sandbar growing into a mile-long stretch of land during the Civil War era. It became a haven for beachgoers, boasting pavilions, bathhouses, saloons, and restaurants. The island was a favorite of Tammany Hall politicians. Backroom deals were made in the open air, amidst the salty breeze and crashing waves. Hog Island’s popularity grew. But nature’s fury had other plans. The winter storm of 1893 severely battered the island. Then, in August of the same year, a devastating hurricane slammed into New York City. Thirty-foot waves crashed ashore, swallowing much of Hog Island. Newspapers reported dramatic rescues, and the island, though diminished, survived. Further storms in 1896 continued to erode the island’s shores. By 1902, Hog Island had vanished entirely, swallowed by the sea. Decades later, in the 1990s, the Army Corps of Engineers dredged sand near the former site of Hog Island to replenish Rockaway Beach. Professor Nicholas Coch and his students from Queens College made a fascinating discovery. Whiskey bottles, beer mugs, and a hurricane lamp, all dating back to the late 19th century, were unearthed. These artifacts offered a tangible link to Hog Island’s vibrant past. Today, only the name remains, a ghostly reminder of a vanished island paradise.
