Bombay Baptist Church

In 1865, a seed of faith was planted in Byculla, Mumbai. This seed grew into the Bombay Baptist Church. Now, it stands tall in Colaba. Bombay Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant community sharing the love of Jesus. The church moved to Colaba in 1911. Its journey has been marked by God’s faithfulness for over a century. Thirty years ago, a charismatic renewal swept through the church. From its Colaba location, Bombay Baptist Church has helped start over 120 house churches across India and abroad. These include social organizations, schools, and even a Bible College. The church’s core value is “PEOPLE ARE IMPORTANT”. This focus has allowed them to witness God “Building Lives and Shaping Destinies”. Their current vision is “CITIES REBORN” through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Bombay Baptist Church is passionate about planting churches in cities throughout India and other nations. They believe God’s power working within them will enable them to spread the love of Jesus Christ. The church has a rich history. It served as a refuge for naval and army personnel. They found spiritual strength before moving on to their next posting. Some early pastors were graduates of Spurgeon’s Bible College. They contributed significantly to the church’s numerical and financial growth. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many pastors and their families faced hardships. Malaria and other illnesses took a toll. Some were even carried onto ships on stretchers due to critical illness. In the 1950s, the church recognized the need for formal theological training. The Berean Bible College was established in the church’s manse. The college later moved to Chembur and then to Bangalore, where it continues to train pastors. Pastor Sumitra Gaikwad, who leads the Hindi congregation at Bombay Baptist Church, is one of the college’s early graduates. The church experienced two waves of charismatic renewal. The first occurred in the 1960s. The second, more lasting wave, arrived in 1975. Many leaders of major charismatic churches in Mumbai trace their experience of being filled with the Holy Spirit back to Bombay Baptist Church. Today, Bombay Baptist Church has a thriving Sunday school, dynamic worship services, and a strong emphasis on community outreach.
