But why “Schlanke Mathilde”? The name has a funny origin. Back in 1908, when the original clock was inaugurated, Mayor was present with his wife Mathilde Evers. In comparison to the slender clock, Mathilde was not so slim. The citizens couldn’t resist the comparison and named the clock “Schlanke Mathilde”. This translates to “Slim Mathilde”. The mayor was reportedly not amused.
Today, Schlanke Mathilde still stands tall on the market square. It serves as a meeting point. It’s a starting point for exploring Hörde. It stands right next to the subway exit.
