Did you know that the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas Margarita Salas wasn’t always in its current location? This impressive building in Ciudad Universitaria is a testament to scientific progress in Spain. For fifty years the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas or CIB as it was then known shared a building with the Instituto Cajal on Calle de Velázquez. Imagine researchers bustling between labs. Their groundbreaking work laid the foundation for modern biology in Spain.

The CIB’s history is deeply intertwined with the legacy of prominent scientists. Margarita Salas herself spent thirteen years here. She developed her doctoral thesis within these walls between 1961 and 1964. Later she returned after her time in the United States with Severo Ochoa. She worked here from 1967 to 1977 alongside her husband Eladio Viñuela. Together they played a pivotal role in the creation of Spain’s first department of molecular biology in 1969. This building bears witness to their achievements. It also stands as a monument to the “Escuela de Madrid de genética”. This significant movement in genetics emerged in the 1970s connecting Spanish researchers with international leaders like Peter Lawrence and Francis Crick.

The CIB’s move to Ciudad Universitaria in 2003 marked a new era. The new building boasts a significant 17000 square meters. Over 7000 are dedicated to laboratories and scientific facilities. The inauguration in 2004 by Infanta Cristina symbolized the continued importance of scientific research in Spain. The modern facilities allow for collaborations and innovation. The CIB continues to produce cutting-edge research. The change of name in 2019 to Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas Margarita Salas honors one of the most important researchers not only in the center’s history but in Spanish molecular biology. It also reflects the ongoing pursuit of scientific excellence.

Today the CIB Margarita Salas houses approximately 450 people. Researchers technicians and administrative staff all work together to foster scientific advancement. Their work spans various areas including biotechnology and biomedicine. They tackle societal challenges by combining research with application development. This impressive institution represents Spain’s unwavering commitment to scientific innovation. Its legacy continues to inspire new generations of scientists. It reflects a history of scientific excellence and a bright future for research in Spain.
