“A soccer field built by the community, for the community.” That’s the spirit of Peter Johann Soccer Field. This isn’t just any pitch. It’s a testament to the dedication and passion of those who believed UNLV deserved a proper home for its soccer teams. Located on the northwest end of campus, next to the Robert Miller Soccer Building, Peter Johann Soccer Field has witnessed countless victories, heartbreaks, and unforgettable moments since its dedication in 1983. Before this field, UNLV soccer teams, despite existing since 1974, were practically nomads. They lacked a true home, a place to establish their identity. Then, Coach Barry Barto stepped in. He saw the need and, with Athletic Director Brad Rothermel, transformed the old softball field into this soccer haven. The construction was a true community effort. Players, coaches, and locals poured their time, labor, and resources into building the field. Without their collective effort, Peter Johann Soccer Field might have remained a dream. The field’s namesake, Peter Johann, was the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a longtime Las Vegas resident and staunch supporter of Rebel soccer. The Johanns established a scholarship fund in Peter’s memory, further cementing their commitment to the sport and UNLV. The field has hosted more than just college games. It’s been the stage for the ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game, international matches, and the annual UNLV/FILA Rebel Soccer Classic. Even radio broadcasts have graced this field, with Connecticut’s WHUS-FM capturing the excitement of games against UNLV. Three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars have also unfolded here, featuring WUSA teams like the San Jose CyberRays, San Diego Spirit, and Boston Breakers. Soccer legends like Brandi Chastain, Kristin Lilly, Tisha Venturini, and Julie Foudy have all showcased their skills on this very turf. The Mexican Olympic Team even played here in 2003, fresh off their qualification for the Athens Games. Over the years, Peter Johann Soccer Field has seen the UNLV men’s team celebrate its 125th victory on home turf and the women’s team achieve remarkable success. With seating for approximately 2,500 spectators, a press box, lights for night games, and its natural grass surface, Peter Johann Soccer Field stands as a symbol of community spirit and the enduring power of sport in Las Vegas.
