Beneath this imposing facade lies a tale of student camaraderie. Here at Haus Austria, we delve into the history of a unique Frankfurt institution.

Haus Austria is home to Corps Austria, a student fraternity with roots stretching back to 1861. It began at the Karl-Ferdinand University in Prague. Imagine the horse-drawn carriages and cobblestone streets of old Prague.

The atmosphere changed. Ethnic tensions rose. A clash known as the Battle of Kuchelbad forced a change. Czech students attacked Corps Austria members. This event highlighted growing animosity within the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

After World War I, Prague was no longer viable. The Corps sought a new home. In 1919, it found one here in Frankfurt at the newly founded Johann Wolfgang Goethe University. This move marked a new chapter.

Corps Austria joined the Kösener Senioren-Convents-Verband. This is an association of Germany’s oldest student fraternities. Members are called “Austrianer.” They uphold traditions of personal etiquette.

But the 20th century brought more challenges. The National Socialist government demanded the expulsion of “non-aryan” members in 1935. Corps Austria refused. As a result, it was forced to close in 1936.

The association of alumni was disbanded by the Gestapo in 1939. This was because it did not cooperate with the National Socialist German Students’ League. Nineteen members died in World War II.

After the war, Corps Austria was reconstituted in Frankfurt in 1949. It rose from the ashes, committed to its values. Today, Corps Austria combines tradition and modernity. It emphasizes character and personal engagement.

The Corps’ colors are black, white, and yellow. These were once the colors of the Habsburg Monarchy’s flag. Members wear a sash and headgear. The headgear varies by season. A black cap is worn in winter. A white “Stürmer” kepi can be worn in summer.

“Durch Eintracht Stark!” This is the Corps’ motto. It means “Strength Through Unity!” This motto reflects their commitment to community and mutual support.

Corps Austria stands for friendship. It has been a Frankfurt institution since 1919. Members value tolerance and individuality. They come from diverse backgrounds. They represent various nationalities, religions, and fields of study.

Many notable figures have emerged from Corps Austria. They include surgeon Vincenz Czerny and mathematician Ott-Heinrich Keller. These men embody the Corps’ commitment to excellence.

Haus Austria is more than just a building. It is a symbol of tradition, resilience, and enduring camaraderie. It combines modern big-city life with student traditions.
