Perhaps you have heard of the Rainbow Bridge. It is also called the Love Bridge. This is Cầu Mống. It stretches gracefully connecting District 1 and District 4. This makes it a vital artery in Ho Chi Minh City’s bustling heart.

Cầu Mống isn’t just any bridge. It is a symbol of history and enduring romance. It stands as one of the city’s oldest bridges. It is a testament to French architectural influence.

Let’s step back in time to 1894. This is when its construction began. The French maritime transport company Messageries Maritimes built it. Initially, the French referred to it as Messageries Maritimes Company Bridge. Some French also affectionately called it Arenciel. This means rainbow in English.

The Vietnamese embraced it with the name Cầu Mống. There are several explanations for this name. Some believe it was the first bridge with a foundation in the city. The words “Móng” meaning foundation and “Mống” sound similar. Others say its arched shape resembled a rainbow.

For years, Cầu Mống served vehicles and pedestrians alike. However, it later transformed into a pedestrian-only bridge. In the 2000s, progress came knocking. The bridge was dismantled to make way for the East-West Highway and Thủ Thiêm Tunnel.

But Cầu Mống’s story did not end there. After the highway and tunnel were complete, parts of the bridge were reinstalled. Staircases were added for easy pedestrian access.

Look around you. Notice the bridge’s design. It stretches 128 meters long and 5.2 meters wide. The pavement is a comfortable 0.5 meters wide. The bridge is inspired by late 19th-century Western bridges. It uses sturdy steel in its construction.

Its emerald green color makes it stand out. It is like a crystal amidst the modern buildings.

Cầu Mống is more than just a passage. It is a place for connection. Couples attach locks to the bridge. These locks symbolize their undying love.

The bridge and the Bến Nghé Channel offer a picturesque backdrop. This attracts photographers and couples. Many come here to capture wedding photos. Both locals and foreigners appreciate its beauty.

As evening descends, Cầu Mống transforms again. People gather at its base. They sip Vietnamese coffee and refreshing drinks. Simple drink stalls offer plastic tables and chairs. Visitors relax on wooden benches. They enjoy snacks and leisurely conversations.

Cầu Mống is more than a bridge. It embodies historic, cultural, and architectural values. It reflects Saigon’s river culture. Big cities appeared along rivers and channels. Ho Chi Minh City has over 200 bridges because of its waterways. Cầu Mống is a part of the city’s transport system.

The French left their mark on Saigon. Cầu Mống is an example of Western architecture from the 19th century.

Today, Cầu Mống stands as a testament to time. It represents love, culture, and architectural history. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Think about its past as you cross this iconic bridge.
