The imposing structure before us is St Peter und Paul. It stands as a testament to faith and community in Heddernheim.

This isn’t just any church. St Peter und Paul has a rich history. Built between 1892 and 1893 it replaced an earlier church that burned down. The neo-Gothic style is striking. It served the Catholic community of Heddernheim.

Heddernheim a village at the time was close to the Nidda river. Before the current St Peter und Paul most Catholics attended services in Heddernheim Castle’s chapel. A Baron Breidbach donated the first church in 1840. That’s a detail many miss.

The current building wasn’t spared the ravages of World War II. Bombing damaged it significantly. When it was rebuilt in the early 1950s post-war paintings were removed.

Today St Peter und Paul is a parish church. It’s part of St Katharina von Siena parish. This larger parish combines six Catholic communities in northern Frankfurt. St Peter und Paul still plays a vital role in its community. Its four bronze bells from the renowned Otto foundry in Bremen-Hemelingen ring out. They are a lasting part of Heddernheim’s soundscape.

The church’s enduring legacy speaks volumes. Its strength through fires and wars showcases resilience. St Peter und Paul remains a focal point of faith. It is a symbol of community in Frankfurt am Main. It deserves our attention and appreciation.
