Can you imagine a giant strawberry greeting you at a roundabout? Here at the Rotunda do Morango, that’s exactly what you’ll find. This quirky sculpture isn’t just a fun photo opportunity. It’s a tribute to Canidelo’s agricultural past. Rotunda do Morango translates to Strawberry Roundabout. The strawberry is a nod to a time when the area was known for its strawberry fields. Historical documents from 1759 mention Canidelo’s production of corn, wheat, chives, and cabbage. But later, strawberries became a prominent crop. Local women, dressed in regional costumes, would carry baskets brimming with these sweet treats to sell in Porto. The Rotunda do Morango sculpture is a whimsical reminder of this heritage. Some compare it to the work of Claes Oldenburg, known for his large-scale sculptures of everyday objects. The sculpture’s design is quite detailed. You can even see the seeds on the giant strawberry. Interestingly, wild strawberries still grow around the base of the sculpture, connecting the present to the past.
