Nestled at the foot of the Black Forest mountains lies the GVV Hexental. It’s not a castle or a monument, but something far more intriguing. The GVV Hexental is a testament to community spirit and clever administration. The year was 1971. Small villages in the Hexental valley faced a dilemma. Incorporation into the growing city of Freiburg loomed. This meant a loss of autonomy. So, they devised a plan. On September 30, 1971, the GVV Hexental, officially the Gemeindeverwaltungsverband Hexental, was born. This administrative association allowed Au, Horben, Merzhausen, Sölden, and Wittnau to pool resources and share administrative tasks. They maintained their independence while enjoying the benefits of cooperation. GVV Hexental’s formation was a novel concept at the time. Even the provision of water played a role. The Zweckverband Wasserversorgung Hexental, formed a year earlier, addressed water scarcity in Au. This highlighted the practical advantages of working together. The GVV Hexental continues to serve approximately 10,000 residents. It’s headquartered in Merzhausen, a charming village within the valley. The GVV Hexental stands as a reminder that unity and collaboration can achieve remarkable results, preserving both identity and efficiency.
