Gazing up at Carmel Mountain, have you ever wondered about its connection to a nearby neighborhood? Carmel Mountain Ranch, nestled in northeast San Diego, actually sits in the shadow of Black Mountain. Carmel Mountain itself is about 10 miles west of the community that borrowed its name. Despite its name, Carmel Mountain Ranch isn’t a ranch at all. It’s a bustling community, bordered by Poway to the east. Other San Diego communities surround it: Rancho Bernardo to the north, Rancho Peñasquitos to the west, and Sabre Springs to the south. Carmel Mountain Ranch is a significant commercial hub. It boasts the fifth-largest office space in San Diego County, with over 6 million square feet. This area is part of an “I-15 edge city”. An edge city is a major employment center outside a traditional downtown. Companies like Carvin Corporation have their headquarters near the shopping centers. You’ll find several retail centers clustered together here: Carmel Mountain Plaza, Carmel Mountain Ranch Town Center, Carmel Mountain Ranch Home Center, Price Plaza (originally a Price Club in 1992), and The Courtyard at Carmel Mountain Ranch. Beyond businesses, Carmel Mountain Ranch has a vital community spirit. The local Chamber of Commerce hosts an annual fall festival. Local businesses, community groups, and schools come together to connect with residents. The Fairway Village neighborhood creates a dazzling Christmas light show, “Holiday Magic at Fairway Village”. Over 85 homes glow from December 1st to January 1st. A block party on the Saturday before Christmas invites everyone to enjoy the festive lights and treats. The area is also a popular Halloween destination, thanks to its large, flat cul-de-sac layout. For recreation, Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Park sits north of Ted Williams Parkway. Highland Ranch Park is located northeast of Highland Ranch Road. Students in Carmel Mountain Ranch attend schools in the Poway Unified School District. Interestingly, the Margaret L. Sellers Processing and Distribution Center is located here. Opened in 1993, this massive postal facility processes mail for a wide region. It even handles over 300 million items during the holiday season.
