The history of this location is as captivating as its scenery. Previously known as Chato 1, TERRAMAR Ranch got its name from a nearby lagoon. In 1970, Miguel Angel Arias discovered the lava tunnels. Two Swiss tourists, intrigued by pirate legends, prompted the discovery. They explored the caves with candles and a nylon rope.
These tunnels now known as the “pirate tunnels” revealed impressive dimensions. The entrance expands into a vast space with geological formations. You can admire lava arms, stalagmites, stalactites and crystal rocks. The walls are covered in calcium carbonate. Today, Rancho Terramar is working to open more of these tunnels for visitors.
