Across the shimmering Xunjiang River, the Pingnan Third Bridge arches with an elegant strength. It’s also known as the Pingnan Great Bridge, a marvel of modern engineering. This isn’t just a bridge; it’s a testament to human ingenuity. Imagine standing here on its opening day, December 28, 2020, feeling the culmination of years of work and a hefty 573 million yuan investment. The Pingnan Great Bridge is more than just a way to cross the river; it represents a significant leap in bridge-building technology. This concrete-filled steel tube arch bridge boasts a main span of 575 meters. This length makes it the longest of its kind in the world, surpassing all other arch bridges. Its design wasn’t chosen arbitrarily. The concrete-filled steel tube arch offers advantages over cable-stayed and suspension bridges: lower cost, higher rigidity, and less maintenance. Think about the constant battle against rust and decay on a massive structure like this. The Pingnan Great Bridge’s design minimizes that struggle, saving time and resources. Professor Zheng Jielian, of Guangxi University, led the team that made this bridge a reality. His team’s innovations solved numerous engineering challenges. For example, the north abutment’s foundation needed reinforcement. They developed a new composite foundation structure. This “Diaphragm wall+grouting reinforced pebble layer” addressed the insufficient bearing capacity and excessive settlement of the original pebble layer foundation. They also pioneered a “force active control” method, significantly reducing tower weight compared to the traditional “stiffness passive control”. Another innovation involved controlling the concrete’s rheological properties. This prevented debonding and void detachment, common issues in steel tube concrete arch bridges. The Pingnan Great Bridge even earned a spot on a set of special stamps commemorating modern bridge construction in China. This set, launched on June 30th in Pingnan County, featured three stamps and a souvenir sheet. The Pingnan Great Bridge stands proudly alongside the Su-Tong Yangtze River Highway Bridge and the Oujiang Beikou Bridge, all designed under Professor Zheng’s leadership. The bridge isn’t merely a functional structure; it’s a symbol of progress, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of excellence in engineering. It connects communities and shortens travel time, serving as a symbol of growth and connection.
