“Crushed, Broken Limestone NEC.” That’s what they call it. Here at Huebner Road Quarry, however, it’s more than just a label. It’s the story of San Antonio itself.

Huebner Road Quarry is a surface metal mine. Vulcan Construction Materials, LLC, operates it. It lies two miles east of IH 10 west. This quarry is active. It has been since May 15, 2013.

Vulcan Materials Company controls this quarry. They have since January 1, 1950. This operation runs two days per week. Workers put in twelve hours per shift. Twelve employees keep things running here at the Huebner Road Quarry.

The Huebner Road Quarry sits at N29.56167 degrees and W98.56889 degrees. It stands at an elevation of 902 feet above sea level. You can find it on the USGS 1:24K topographic map Castle Hills, TX.

But there’s more to the Huebner Road Quarry story. Let’s jump back in time. Back to when Joseph Huebner arrived from Austria. It was five years earlier, in 1858, when Joseph Huebner bought land. The land surrounded Huebner Creek and Huebner Road. Huebner was a businessman from San Antonio. Soon he erected three limestone buildings. He began to acquire horses, mules and cattle.

He also opened a stagecoach stop. It was on the family’s homestead ranch. This ranch was on the San Antonio to Bandera stage line route. The stop offered blacksmith services and a change of stock. Overnight accommodations were available. This ensured travelers could pass the flooded creek. Joseph Huebner died in 1882. He was buried on the homestead property.

Today, the Huebner Road Quarry still stands. It is a testament to time and industry. It reminds us of San Antonio’s past. Joseph Huebner’s legacy lives on in every crushed stone.
