Seventeen seventy-eight. A colossal task nears completion. Before you stands the Bronze Horseman a monument of immense scale and historical weight.

This isn’t just any statue. It’s a symbol of St Petersburg itself. Empress Catherine the Great commissioned it. She wanted to connect herself to Peter the Great. She sought legitimacy. This statue was her way to achieve this.

The sculptor Etienne Maurice Falconet faced immense challenges. The Thunder Stone the statue’s pedestal was the largest stone ever moved by human effort. It weighed around 1500 tons initially. Imagine moving that. It required ingenuity. A Greek lieutenant-colonel developed a sled system using bronze spheres. Think of it as early ball bearings. Four hundred men toiled for nine months. They dragged the stone over frozen ground then by barge.

The statue’s creation wasn’t without drama. During casting the mold broke. Molten bronze erupted causing fires. All the workers fled except one. Emelyan Khailov risked his life saving the work.

Marie-Anne Collot a young apprentice sculpted Peter the Great’s face. She used his death mask and portraits as references. She created a masterpiece. Falconet even used a Roman bronze hand found in the Netherlands for the statue’s right hand.

The unveiling in 1782 was a grand spectacle. Thousands gathered. Yet Falconet was absent. A dispute with the Empress had forced his departure.

The Bronze Horseman depicts Peter the Great astride his horse. His arm points towards the Neva River. His horse tramples a serpent symbolizing Peter’s enemies.

Legend claims the statue protects St Petersburg. During the Siege of Leningrad it survived 900 days of bombardment virtually unscathed.

Look at the detail the grandeur. The Bronze Horseman isn’t just a statue. It is a testament to ambition ingenuity and enduring power. A legend forged in bronze.
