“A hundred years old, they say,” a voice murmured behind you. “Can you imagine the stories this tree could tell?” You turn to face the Pioppo del centenario di Don Ceppi Plaque, a silent sentinel to time, nestled amidst the bustling cityscape. This plaque tells a tale, not of grand battles or political intrigue, but of a life dedicated to community and faith. This is the story of Don Eugenio Ceppi, a man who found his calling in the heart of Villasanta and left an enduring legacy that thrives to this day. Don Eugenio arrived in Villasanta in 1947, a young priest brimming with fervor and a passion for guiding young minds. Recognizing the need for camaraderie and growth, in 1950, he founded the Villasanta Scout group. This group, still active today with 120 members, stands as a testament to Don Ceppi’s vision. For over 70 years, his presence graced the community. His initial years were spent in the Parish of Sant’Anastasia, followed by his time at the Villa San Clemente retirement home. His dedication to his calling never wavered. He touched the lives of countless young people, nurturing their spirits and fostering a sense of belonging. Even in his later years, his connection with his former scouts remained strong. Imagine the joy as Don Eugenio, in December, just a few years ago, celebrated his 98th birthday via Zoom. Surrounded, albeit virtually, by his scouts, including Enrico Fontana, the former mayor of Villasanta, Don Ceppi’s impact on their lives was undeniable. Fontana himself remarked, “If today there is a strong scout group […] we owe it to Don Eugenio.” The Pioppo del centenario di Don Ceppi Plaque serves as a physical reminder of his enduring spirit. Just as the poplar tree has stood for a century, bearing witness to the passage of time, so too does Don Ceppi’s legacy continue to inspire and uplift. He might be gone, but his work continues to shape lives and build community.
