“A cathedral of dreams,” whispered a young boy to his mother, gazing up at the Cheongju Diocese Gaeosin Cathedral. Here, at the heart of Seoul’s bustling Gaeosin-dong, stands a testament to faith and perseverance. Cheongju Diocese Gaeosin Cathedral hasn’t always stood here so grandly. Its story begins in the year 2000. At that time, the Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul began laying the foundation for the Masan Cathedral. It was envisioned as a beacon of hope, a place where people could come together in worship.
The original Masan Cathedral was located at 289-3 Gaeosin-dong 1-ga in Geoje City. It served the community faithfully. Then, in 2001, a new chapter unfolded. The decision was made to relocate and construct a new, larger cathedral. This marked the birth of Cheongju Diocese Gaeosin Cathedral as we know it today. By November 2001, the first Mass was celebrated within its newly constructed walls.
The growth of Cheongju Diocese Gaeosin Cathedral didn’t stop there. In 2003, amidst growing needs, expansion plans were put into action. The cathedral underwent significant renovations and extensions. The result was a grander, more awe-inspiring structure. It could accommodate a larger congregation and serve the community more effectively. This expansion was completed on June 30, 2004.
The Cheongju Diocese Gaeosin Cathedral has witnessed important milestones in its history. On July 8, 2005, the first church bell resonated throughout Gaeosin-dong. Then, on February 14, 2006, Bishop Kim Se-hyeon was appointed as the second diocesan bishop. He led the church forward, nurturing its growth and spiritual development. Over the years, Cheongju Diocese Gaeosin Cathedral continued to evolve. Its impact extended beyond the walls of the church, touching the lives of countless individuals.
The Cheongju Diocese Gaeosin Cathedral is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the unwavering faith and dedication of the Catholic community in Gaeosin-dong. It stands as a symbol of unity, hope, and spiritual growth. As you stand here today, take a moment to appreciate the journey of Cheongju Diocese Gaeosin Cathedral.
