From a covered river to a bustling boulevard. That’s the story of Boulevard Maurice Lemonnier. Here we are, standing on a grand avenue, once the murky path of the Senne River. Imagine the transformation. Boulevard Maurice Lemonnier, formerly known as Boulevard du Hainaut, stretches from Place Fontainas towards Gare du Midi. This boulevard, part of the central boulevards, owes its existence to the vision of Mayor Jules Anspach and the designs of architect Léon-Pierre Suys. Created between 1867 and 1871 by covering the Senne River, Boulevard Maurice Lemonnier stands as a testament to urban renewal. This section of the central boulevards may be less prestigious than others. Yet, it holds its own unique charm. The Palais du Midi at numbers 132-172 adds a touch of grandeur to Boulevard Maurice Lemonnier. The boulevard is bisected by Place Anneessens, where you’ll find École Communale n° 13. As you stroll along Boulevard Maurice Lemonnier, observe the modest elegance of the buildings. Many of the original stucco-decorated facades from the 1870s and 1880s still grace the street. Look for the award-winning facades at numbers 17-19 and 110, recognized in the facade competition of 1872-1876. Notice the handiwork of developers “Billen et Consorts” at numbers 203, 205-211, and 215-217. These buildings from the same era, originally individual houses or businesses with private entrances, now mostly house various shops. Some facades have been updated or even extended upwards, adding another layer to the boulevard’s architectural history. The metro station “Anneessens” lies beneath us, adorned with Pierre Alechinsky’s graphic composition, “Les Sept Écritures,” based on Christian Dotremont’s work. Boulevard Maurice Lemonnier pays tribute to a remarkable figure. Maurice Lemonnier, an alderman of Brussels and a World War I deportee, is honored by having this boulevard bear his name since 1919. From a hidden river to a vibrant artery, Boulevard Maurice Lemonnier embodies Brussels’ spirit of transformation and remembrance.
