Hidden beneath the Gymnasium Bornbrook lies a secret. A 700-seat bomb shelter built in 1970-71. This isn’t just any school. Gymnasium Bornbrook in Hamburg’s Lohbrgge district holds a fascinating history. Founded in 1970 its name comes from a nearby street named after a stream. The school itself was also built that year. Imagine the construction workers laying the foundations. Little did they know a substantial shelter would soon be added to safeguard the school community.

Gymnasium Bornbrook is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where history unfolds. Its halls have echoed with the footsteps of generations of students. Some went on to become prominent figures. Zhi Gin Lam a footballer attended. So did Guido Schroter a comic artist. The school boasts a rich musical tradition. Its various bands and choirs showcase talents. A special “wind instrument class” is offered in fifth grade. Pupils borrow instruments for two years. They receive instruction and can join the school’s Big Bands later.

The school’s commitment to its students is impressive. Gymnasium Bornbrook is a full-day school with a strong focus on career guidance. It has received numerous awards for its outstanding career counselling. The school also participates in the vocational aptitude test of the geva institute.

Renovations have transformed the building. Asbestos removal occurred in 2012. From 2016 to 2020 extensive renovations modernized the buildings. This improved energy efficiency and fire safety. The project cost nearly 10 million euros.

Gymnasium Bornbrook stands on a large campus. It encompasses five buildings. The main building houses classrooms and the cafeteria. A spacious three-court sports hall is shared with local sports clubs. The school is surrounded by the Lohbrgge-Nord residential area. Its location is north of Lohbrgger Landstrasse. A green area borders the Bornmuhlenbach to the north. The Mendelstrasse elementary school is to the south.

Teachers like Gudrun Koncke a GAL politician and Ingo Langhans a teacher and textbook author contributed to the school’s atmosphere. Ingo Langhans served as deputy headmaster from 2011 to 2019. Even Chris Tall a stand-up and film comedian attended the school.
