“Shall we dance?” A puppet whispers invitingly from the stage of the Teatro de Titeres / Cine de Verano.
Welcome to the enchanting Teatro de Titeres. It is also called Cine de Verano in the heart of Madrid. This unique space offers a blend of cultural experiences for locals and tourists alike.
The Teatro de Titeres has a rich history dating back to the 17th century. The original theatre was torn down in the 1960s. A wooden structure replaced it. Francisco Porras managed it. He was a great puppeteer who created over 600 marionettes.
For two decades Porras led the Teatro de Titeres. In 1994, the mayor destituted him. Afterward, Asociacion Titirilandia managed it until August 31, 2016. After a period of closure for revision, the management became municipal.
Today, the Teatro de Titeres in El Retiro Park is a municipal space. The mission is to be a cultural reference for puppet theatre. It also promotes marionettes and objects.
The Teatro de Titeres offers a permanent annual program. It is outdoors and free. Shows occur every weekend. They take place in the morning during winter. In summer, they happen in the afternoon.
Throughout the year, the Teatro de Titeres organizes specific cycles. It also holds activities to promote the art of puppet theatre. The theatre is involved in training new professionals. These professionals bring different visions to this art.
In July and August, a special program called Titeres de Verano takes place. It offers specially selected shows for the summer. At the end of August, FITMadriz is celebrated. It is a summer festival with shows and activities for about 12 days. The festival offers a selection of the best national and international shows.
