Tracing its roots back to 1685 the story of Ganztagsschule Fährstraße is one of resilience and transformation. Originally known as Schule Reiherstieg this predecessor school found a new home in 1870. Then in 1900 the current main building of Ganztagsschule Fährstraße was constructed. It was initially called Volksschule III.

The Ganztagsschule Fährstraße building has witnessed much of Hamburg’s history. It served as a Volksschule Reiherstieg until 1937. In 1939 the name changed to Schule Fährstraße becoming co-educational. World War II left its mark. A bombing raid in August 1944 damaged the old building. Repairs were completed between 1947 and 1948.

Expansion began in the 1960s. A distinctive cross-shaped addition was built in 1961. An assembly hall followed in 1966 and pavilions in 1971. The original building underwent modernization in 1973. By 1980 Ganztagsschule Fährstraße stood out among Hamburg’s schools. It had a remarkably high percentage of students without German citizenship 61 percent.

The Hamburg school reform played a pivotal role. At the start of the 2010-2011 school year Ganztagsschule Fährstraße transitioned into a primary school. Further changes came with the 2016-2017 renovation of the cross-shaped building. The original 1900 building remains a testament to the past. It holds a protected status as a historical landmark. Ganztagsschule Fährstraße stands as a symbol of continuous evolution. It adapts to changing times while preserving its rich heritage. The school stands tall a beacon of education and history in the heart of Hamburg.
