In 1877, a modest schoolhouse opened its doors. This was the origin of Osaka Municipal Ikuno Elementary School. It was first known as the Sixth Elementary School of the First Small District of the Fifth Large District. Later, it became the Public Ikuno Elementary School. It underwent several name changes reflecting the evolving times and administrative shifts. It became Higashinari Ikuno Regular Elementary School in 1892. It relocated to its present location in 1898.

Here at Osaka Municipal Ikuno Elementary School, you stand on grounds steeped in over a century of history. The school witnessed Japan’s Meiji Restoration, Taisho period, and the turbulent years of World War II. In 1907, the school took on an additional role. It served as the second branch of the Osaka Normal School’s affiliated elementary school, now known as Osaka Kyoiku University. This role, however, lasted only until 1919. A higher education section was added in 1911, changing the name again to Higashinari Ikuno Regular Higher Elementary School.

Osaka Municipal Ikuno Elementary School also saw expansions and contractions. As Osaka’s population boomed in the 1920s and 1930s, new schools sprang up nearby. This led to a redistribution of Ikuno Elementary’s school district. Parts of the district were assigned to the newly established schools. These included Kashiwabashi Fifth Elementary School, Ikuno Second Elementary School, and Ikuno Third Elementary School. The higher education section was transferred to Kashiwabashi Higher Elementary School in 1928. This simplified the name back to Osaka City Ikuno Regular Elementary School. With the National School Order of 1941, the school was renamed Ikuno National School.

During World War II, as the war intensified, student evacuations became a grim necessity. Ikuno National School, like other schools in Osaka, implemented these evacuations in 1944. Students were sent to safer areas. Tragically, the school suffered significant damage during the fourth Osaka air raid on June 15, 1945. The school buildings were partially destroyed.

After the war, the education system underwent reforms. In 1947, the school was renamed Osaka Municipal Ikuno Elementary School. In the same year, Tajima Elementary School was separated from Ikuno. Ikuno Elementary continued to evolve, opening a nursery school class in 1974.

Fast forward to the 21st century. In 2016, the Ikuno Ward office launched the “Ikuno Ward Western Area School Reorganization Plan”. This plan aimed to consolidate several smaller schools in the western part of Ikuno Ward. The goal was to create integrated elementary and junior high schools. This would better facilitate small-group education and promote closer cooperation between the levels. As a result, Osaka Municipal Ikuno Elementary School was closed in March 2022. The school, along with four other elementary schools and Ikuno Junior High School, was merged to form the Osaka Municipal Ikuno Mirai Gakuen (Ikuno Future School). This marked the end of an era for this historic institution. The legacy of Osaka Municipal Ikuno Elementary School lives on in the memories of its countless alumni. It also serves as a reminder of the ever-changing landscape of education.
