“Whose bright idea was it to plant corn in Brooklyn?” a young girl giggled, tugging at her grandmother’s sleeve at Goodwin Gardens. Goodwin Gardens, tucked away on Goodwin Place near Broadway, isn’t your typical city park. This 13,000-square-foot space is a vibrant testament to community spirit. It’s a place where tomatoes, basil, and even corn flourish alongside collard greens and pumpkins. In 2017, Goodwin Gardens was derelict and dangerous. Drug paraphernalia littered the ground, and the space was more of a haven for the homeless than a park. Kofi Thomas, a resident just around the corner, saw the potential beneath the neglect. He rallied a small group of neighbors, and together they began the arduous task of reclaiming the park. They hauled away hundreds of pounds of trash, piece by piece, picking up shards of glass by hand. Slowly, Goodwin Gardens began to breathe again. The transformation wasn’t just about clearing debris. It was about rebuilding community bonds and fostering a sense of ownership. The park, originally built in the 1990s by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, had fallen into disrepair after years of neglect, exacerbated by damage from Hurricane Sandy. Thomas and his team collaborated with the Parks Department and the adjacent senior center, ensuring the revitalized space catered to the community’s needs. Today, Goodwin Gardens thrives as an urban learning garden. It’s a place where seniors share their gardening wisdom with eager youngsters, where healthy living is promoted through the growth of organic produce, and where the community gathers for events, from art projects to concerts and festivals. The garden continues to rely on donations and the dedication of its stewards to keep growing and flourishing. Goodwin Gardens stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder that even in the heart of a bustling city, a little bit of green, a lot of love, and a strong community can transform a forgotten space into a thriving oasis.
