Brigitte Matschinsky-Denninghoff and Martin Matschinsky created this artwork. They unveiled the Solidarität Sculpture in 1987. This was during Berlin’s 750th-anniversary celebration. The sculpture features a “broken chain”. It symbolizes the severed connections between West and East Berlin because of the Berlin Wall.
After the Wall fell, the city purchased the Solidarität Sculpture. It serves to commemorate this pivotal era in German history. The Solidarität Sculpture was part of “Skulpturenboulevard Kurfürstendamm”. This event showcased eight sculptures. The Solidarität Sculpture, Pyramide, and Cadillacs in Form der nackten Maja remained after the anniversary.
The city and Deutsche Bank acquired the Solidarität Sculpture after its lease expired. The artists had freedom in choosing the location for their work. The Matschinsky-Denninghoffs selected Tauentzienstraße. It stands in front of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche. The church was heavily damaged during World War II.
The Solidarität Sculpture comprises four steel tubes that reach upwards. Each tube is about two meters in diameter. They are reinforced with a concrete base. Each side tilts for about half a meter. Then they change direction looping but not touching. This symbolizes the closeness and isolation between the two sides of Berlin. The tubes are covered in chrome nickel steel. The surface can darken or shine depending on the time of day.
Brigitte Matschinsky-Denninghoff described the sculpture’s intended impact. “The Solidarität Sculpture is accessible from all sides. It can be perceived by viewers. What is emphasized is the direction West-East and East-West. Our sculpture is specifically designed as a big, organically grown gate. It forms a double arch which is not just necessary and practical but an invigorating emphasis. We are trying to communicate something of Berlin’s situation in a symbolic way.”
