What is a “Master Plan,” and why would a park need one? Here at Montie Beach Park, that question has been asked and answered with passion and community spirit. This 23-acre park, a green haven on the eastern edge of Greater Heights, is much more than just a park. It’s the heart of the Brooke Smith neighborhood, the last predominantly Hispanic community in the area. And the people here have a vision for their park. That vision is enshrined in the Montie Beach Master Plan, a blueprint for the future that was born from the love and dedication of the Montie Beach Civic Club. They understood that Montie Beach Park deserved to be a reflection of the vibrant community it serves, a family destination for all of Greater Heights. So they took action, raising the funds needed to develop a plan that would guide the park’s growth and revitalization. Working hand-in-hand with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, they brought in experts to assess the park’s needs and listen to the community’s dreams. The process was a testament to the power of collaboration. Community meetings and open houses were held, ensuring that everyone’s voice was heard. The result? A plan that not only addressed the park’s physical needs but also captured the spirit of the people it serves. The Master Plan aims to enhance safety, create spaces for gathering and play, and above all, celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Brooke Smith neighborhood. So, the next time you find yourself strolling through Montie Beach Park, take a moment to appreciate the passion and dedication that shaped this special place. It’s a testament to the belief that a park, like a community, thrives when everyone has a voice and a vision for a brighter future.
