Whispers of peat and history linger here at Pröckelmoorteich. Imagine this tranquil pond a century ago. It wasn’t always a serene part of Ohlsdorf Cemetery.

Pröckelmoorteich a name echoing the past. It translates to “peat-pricking pond” a clue to its origins. Until the 1920s this area was a boggy expanse. A marshland between the villages of Klein Borstel Wellingsbüttel and Bramfeld. A small stream flowed southward feeding the Bramfelder See. Peat cutting shaped the landscape. The name itself reveals this history. “Prökeln” in Low German means “to prick” or “to pierce”. A testament to the tools used to extract the peat.

Otto Linne’s vision transformed Pröckelmoorteich. In 1928 he incorporated this last piece of land into Ohlsdorf Cemetery. A circular pond roughly 120 meters in diameter was created. Concentric terraces were built around Pröckelmoorteich for urn graves. The design is a testament to thoughtful landscaping. It seamlessly blends the natural with the memorial. The pond sits in the northern part of the cemetery east of the Kornweg entrance.

The original stream’s course altered. It’s now replaced by a 15-meter-wide canal. This is the Inselkanal. It’s part of a system of rectangular ponds and lakes. This network eventually flows into Bramfelder See and the Moorkampgraben.

Stand here at Pröckelmoorteich and reflect. On the transformation of a bog into a tranquil space. A place of quiet remembrance. A space that tells of peat cutting of a visionary landscape architect and of respectful memorialization. Pröckelmoorteich a place where history meets serenity.
