Shrouded in mist and mystery, high in the mountains of Japan, whispers echo of ascetics with supernatural powers. These are the Yamabushi of 山峯法, practitioners of Shugendo. Shugendo is a unique blend of esoteric Buddhism and Shinto. Here, at 山峯法, you can glimpse this ancient tradition. Yamabushi translates to “one who lies in the mountains.” This reflects their ascetic practices in sacred mountain ranges, including those near Osaka. Their beliefs center on nature worship and the sacred mountains where gods reside. They engage in physical austerities and meditation to gain spiritual insight and powers.

Yamabushi practices draw from various sources. These include kami worship, esoteric Buddhism, Taoism, and mountain shamanism. They have main training centers in Kumano and Kyushu, among other holy mountains. Here, they undergo rigorous retreats, especially during the harsh winter months. These retreats are believed to grant special spiritual powers. The Yamabushi also partake in unique esoteric initiations known as shōkanjō. These initiations are based on Vajrayana Buddhist ceremonies. Their distinctive attire includes white robes symbolizing purity, a key concept in Shinto. They also wear a tokin headgear, a hisshiki animal skin, and carry a horagai conch shell trumpet. They use the horagai in rituals and for signaling. Their shakujō, a metal staff, and oi backpack accompany them on their pilgrimages.

Historically, Yamabushi played vital roles in Japanese religious and cultural life. They performed rituals, prayers, and fire ceremonies. They provided spiritual services at shrines and temples without permanent priests. They also guided pilgrims, especially on routes to the sacred Kumano mountains. Together with miko shrine maidens, Yamabushi engaged in exorcisms, healings, and shamanic trances. They served the populace in various ways, including performing Shinto rituals when Shinto priests were absent. Shugendo, however, faced suppression during the Meiji era in the late 19th century. The government saw it as a “primitive superstition,” incompatible with modernization. This led to the destruction of many Shugendo sites and artifacts. Thankfully, after the war, Shugendo experienced a revival. Japan’s new constitution guaranteed religious freedom. Modern Yamabushi training has adapted to contemporary life while preserving core teachings.

Today, even visitors can experience aspects of the Yamabushi path. Guided pilgrimages, meditation in nature, and participation in rituals offer a glimpse into this ancient tradition. At 山峯法, you can connect with the heart of this fascinating practice. Consider this your invitation to explore this ancient tradition further. You can delve into the Yamabushi worldview and experience the enduring power of nature and spirituality in Japan.
