Picture this. You are standing before Dalton-Ellis Hall a sprawling complex steeped in history. Its story begins long before this imposing structure. Dalton-Ellis Hall is more than just student accommodation. It’s a living testament to Manchester’s rich educational past.

Dalton Hall’s origins trace back to 1876. Founded by Quakers it initially housed students from a Quaker background attending Owens College. This was a bold move. Owens College was one of only two institutions in the country to welcome dissenters at the time. The hall’s name honors John Dalton a famous Manchester scientist and Quaker. The current Main Hall the first purpose-built student residence in England opened in 1882. Designed by George T Redmayne it stands proudly alongside St Chrysostom’s Church another of Redmayne’s creations.

Expansion came in 1892 with the acquisition of Eaglesfield a large Victorian house. This increased capacity but wasn’t enough to satisfy growing student numbers. The Nield Wing added more rooms and a Junior Common Room early in the 20th century. Dalton Hall became a university hall of residence in 1958. Initially intended for both genders it remained male-only until its merger.

Ellis Llwyd Jones Hall a women’s hall founded in 1919 joined the story in 1987. Interestingly this hall was moved brick by brick to its current location near Dalton Hall. The merger created the Dalton-Ellis Hall we see today.

The complex now boasts several blocks each with its own character and history. The Main Hall and Eaglesfield are Grade II listed buildings. Sunnyside houses the library and music rooms. Sporting facilities including tennis courts a croquet lawn and a squash court are also available. Recent renovations between February and September 2023 modernized the Graham and Ewings blocks.

Dalton-Ellis Hall is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant community. It’s a place where students have lived studied and thrived for over a century. The hall’s history is interwoven with Manchester’s educational and social fabric. It continues to evolve yet retains its unique charm. As you leave Dalton-Ellis Hall remember its intriguing past and its exciting future.
